Collage

The project extends idea of collage both spatially and funcionally. The collage of different organisations divides the square into three funcional zones: a gallery, a park and a street facade. Tension between the zones is reinforced by the emergence of a mass, which houses a cafeteria, whose functioning reacts to all of the three distinctive qualities. The wing facing the open-air gallery becomes a bookstore cafeteria, the side placed against the park opens the facade towards nature and the zone along the street turns into an espresso bar.

Gallery of sounds

Centralised disruption of the surface creates a sunken plaza, where movement of pedestrians coincides with the travelling of sounds. Volumes emerging from the pattern acquire distinctive acoustic properties extending perceptive qualities of the square. Converging paths lead visitor from the level of the exterior to the inside, towards the main exhibition area, from which the movement sequentially continues inwards, into the diverging secondary routes. The gallery constitutes a space of its own within the urban tissue, a place that confronts art against the everyday life.

We live in a world populated by structures - a complex mixture of geological, biological, social and linguistic constructions that are nothing but accumulations of materials shaped and hardened by history. Immersed as we are in this mixture, we cannot help but interact in a variety of ways with the other historical constructions that surround us, and in these interactions we generate novel combinations, some of which posses emergent properties. In turn, these synergistic combinations, whether of human origin or not, become the raw material for further mixtures. This is how the population of structures inhabiting our planet has acquired its rich variety, as the entry of novel materials into the mix triggers wild proliferations of new forms.

Place sa miejscami w ktorych skupia sie aktywnosc miasta. To obszary rozluznienia ruchu, modulujace przeplywy, spowalniajace ruch, poszerzajace perspektywe, i odslaniajace ukryty dotad obraz metropolii. Podcienia, pomniki, schody, fontanny, nagrzane sloncem posadzki, parasole drzew, zakamarki, klomby, blokujace ruch samochodowy zapory, rampy i latarnie staja sie elementami spontanicznej interpretacji, poszerzajac swoje pierwotne przeznaczenie.

Flow modulation

Geometric transformation of the square's pavement alters and structurizes the movement of pedestrians. The periodic structure that gave rise to this intervention became differentiated into four functional areas: a fountain, an open space, a place for relax and a meeting point. None of them is decisively defined, rather they exist as a formal diversity, whose properties can be freely interpreted for new uses. Functioning of the square is responsive to the amount of water that fills up the pattern, modelling organisation of the space with both persistent compositions and temporary weather conditions. The flows of water and people become one mutually affective structure.

Tectonic interface

Etnological Museum museum at the square remains silent and anonymous for the pedestrians. The border of intervention defines an area, which unveils its funcioning, extends its functionality and modifies the qualities of its surroundings. Linear prolongations of the internal exhibition routes travel through space, carving surface of the square, until they reach the convergence point of the hierarchical structure. Additional functions of the museum fill the volumes between the corridors, attracting and internalizing the flows of visitors. The border that provokes visual connections simultaneously impairs the continuity of car traffic liberating the square for pedestrian activities. This tectonic landscape exists detached from the context– the horizon of the square remains untouched.
